FSD meeting and weekly recap 2026-05-29

by Craig Topham Contributions Published on Jun 02, 2026 03:31 PM
Check out the important work our volunteers accomplished this week and at today's Free Software Directory (FSD) IRC meeting.

Every week, free software activists from around the world come together in #fsf on Libera.Chat to help improve the FSD, which is a catalog of useful free software that runs under free GNU-like systems (not limited to the GNU operating system and its GNU/Linux variants) and a project of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). This recaps the work we accomplished at the Friday, May 29th 2026 meeting, as well as entries updated during the week. This week we saw a couple of new programs added and we worked together with the developer and maintainer of 9flare to improve its licensing information and add the program to the Directory.

Thank you volunteers

Each week we like to thank the IRC volunteers who worked on the Directory during the meeting.

A special thanks to:

  • hwpplayer1 for their help during the meeting.

General overview

While working on adding 9flare to the Directory, we had an interesting conversation that touched such topics as the importance of having licensing notices in source code files, licensing of static data files used by the program, the meaning of licensing under (A)GPLv3 or later, and the role of copyright notices. It was also an opportunity to remind the community that in the Directory we put links to specific version packages examined for its freedom, as new issues may come up during subsequent program development.

New programs approved with licensing check:

  • Zentinel is a security-first reverse proxy built to guard the free web.
  • Wazuh is a Unified XDR and SIEM protection for endpoints and server workloads.
  • 9flare is a proof-of-work CAPTCHA implementation written in C.

Join us each week to help improve the FSD every Friday in #fsf on Libera.Chat from 12:00 to 15:00 EDT (16:00 to 19:00 UTC). Find out more about upcoming FSD IRC Meetings by subscribing to our events RSS feed.
